A Practical Guide for Millers & Manufacturers
VDB Africa partners with food producers to deliver compliant, cost-effective vitamin and mineral fortification. This guide explains the key choices you’ll make – from premix selection and regulation to quality control and shelf life – so your fortified products meet standards and perform on shelf.

What a premix is – and why it matters
A fortification premix is a precise blend of vitamins and minerals designed to hit target nutrient levels per serving. The right blend enables accurate dosing at scale, even distribution through the product, and stability during processing and storage. When premix design is handled well, you minimise reformulation risk, protect sensory quality, and keep labels credible.
Standards and compliance in Africa
Across African markets, regulations reference national standards, Codex guidance and WHO recommendations, with local tolerances and test methods layered on top. Build compliance in from the start: confirm target levels per 100 g or per serving, set sensible overages to offset expected losses, and align label claims and permitted additives with country requirements. Good documentation saves time at audit and avoids costly relabelling.
Choosing a premix supplier
Look for technical depth as much as price. You need formulation support, help with line trials, and clear regulatory guidance. Expect specification sheets and COAs for every batch, plus traceability from raw materials to finished goods. A supplier audited to HACCP or FSSC 22000, with realistic lead times and transparent cost-per-dose modelling, will keep production predictable and compliant. VDB Africa provides specs and COAs on request, with full batch traceability and audited quality systems.
Getting the formulation right
Select nutrient forms that suit your matrix and process – for example, ferrous fumarate for cereals or encapsulated vitamin A for heat and light stability. Account for moisture, temperature and pH when setting overages, and use carriers or encapsulation to protect flavour and colour. Calibrate feeders carefully so inclusion rates stay consistent from trial run to commercial scale.
Production and quality control
Handle premix in cool, dry conditions and rotate stock on a strict FIFO basis. Sequence your mixing to achieve homogeneity, verify sieve integrity, and keep metal detection in place. Build a verification plan that includes in-process checks, routine homogeneity tests and periodic third-party assays. Release finished goods only when batch COAs match your specifications.

Shelf life, packaging and storage
Stability depends on nutrient chemistry, carriers and environmental control. Choose packaging that limits oxygen, light and moisture, validate with real-time or accelerated studies, and maintain warehouse temperature and humidity within spec. Clear date coding and recall-ready records make compliance simpler and protect brand trust.
Costing and ROI
Translate premix price into cost per pack or per tonne so commercial teams can compare SKUs fairly. Consider any throughput changes from density or flow adjustments, then weigh returns: stronger nutrition claims, access to regulated markets, and lower regulatory risk often justify small cost uplifts on staple products.
Industries and applications
We support fortification across maize meal, wheat flour, rice and edible oils, as well as powdered and RTD beverages, dairy and plant-based drinks, and specialised nutrition such as supplements, RUTF/ONS, bars and cereals. If you’re exploring a new format, our team can run a quick feasibility check before you commit to trials.
